Life is About Energy
“Life is about energy. Wisdom is how you spend it.” – for Fire Station #65 at 103rd and East Century Boulevard, in Watts. Commissioned by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs 2003 – completion 2006. The title is a quote from Father Amde Hamilton of the Watts Prophets. The Watts Prophets are an amazing trio of poets, rooted in the community of Watts, who rose from the ashes of the 1965 Watts rebellion to become innovative poets (the grandfathers of hip-hop), and inspirational teachers to today’s youth. This project deals with the element of Fire as a source of inspiration as well as destruction.

If/Then
“If – Then” was a design collaboration between myself and Los Angeles’ city architects for the Downey Child Care Center in Lincoln Heights, CA. and commissioned by the L.A. Department of Cultural Affairs. This project describes a journey. The journey happens inside the building but references the environment outside– trains, cars, the L.A. River. A pathway is suggested starting with the linoleum art wall in the entryway, jumping off onto the floor, and out onto the exterior two color concrete patio. The children can actually make up their own physical journey. The patio carries an abbreviated labyrinth which contains the word “IF” and continues into the classroom with the labyrinth motif, snaking back out onto the patio. The “if…then” refers to the choices one makes on the path of life.
