Dot • Meter
Public Art for the Department of Transportation, West Los Angeles Parking Enforcement Facility
11214 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, California (Exposition and Sepulveda in West Los Angeles)
Dot • Meter 1995-1999
• Dot – short for Department of Transportation.
• Meter – a reference to the parking meter.
• Dot – a round spot or filled in circle.
• Meter – a rhythmic pattern.
• Dot – a woman's name. Historically, parking enforcement officers were women, then known as "Meter Maids."
• Meter – a device used to measure time.
The concept for this piece was to create a friendly, colorful atmosphere where the artwork can be experienced on many levels by people visiting the site and for the people working at the site. The symbols have been used not only to represent traffic and transportation but also as geometric forms in different materials. By encompassing a large area with a repeating pattern a sense of motion or a "meter" has been established.
