Welcome to the World
Proposal Approved by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission May 6, 1999 – Completed June 2001
This work is intended to give the children at the center a “larger than life” sense of themselves and to expand their interest in the earth and other populations.
(6) Large (5’ to 6’ tall) cut-out figures of children are attached to the walls in the hallway and lobby. The figures of the children are active and playful, showing them doing activities such as playing ball, dancing, swinging, tumbling. Each figure represents a continent on the earth, painted to show the individual topography of that continent. Overlaying the painted surface are symbols created by the indigenous populations of that continent. Symbols show each indigenous population’s tree of life, native animals, and various other ancient symbols representing luck, hope, love, protection, philosophy, creativity and other seasonal icons. The outline of the specific continent is placed over the heart on each figure.
