Epidermis Emporium
The EPIDERMIS EMPORIUM was a solo exhibition shown at the Kristi Engle Gallery in downtown Los Angeles in 2007.
EPIDERMIS EMPORIUM is a tongue in cheek look at how we view the skin we live in – the human body. It seems we have an ambivalent or dichotomous relationship to the body which has both sacred (honored) and profane (misused) aspects. On one hand, as far back as we’ve had ancestors, we’ve shown reverence to the figure by recreating it in sculpture, paintings, religious and sacred objects. On the other hand, we have propelled the human body into the likes of dolls, posters, and the mass media in general (for who knows how long), in order to capture, control and sell it for commercial gain.
