PACOIMA = Rushing Waters
Railing design for a bike bridge at San Fernando road over the Pacoima wash. 2002 design approved – completed in 2014. Agency: Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering.
Inspiration: site itself – the Pacoima Wash, the heat of the sun, and the very notion of motion with the use of the bridge for bicyclists, with cars whizzing by on one side and the train on the other side. Addressing all locations, the railing is kinetic, not because it moves, but because everyone is moving around it.
“Pacoima” – native language (Tongva, Gabrielino or Fernandeno) for “rushing waters”
“People facing the Sun” – native to Tatavian Fernandeno
